Re: Evelyn You're welcome and thanks so much for the additional recommendations! I forgot about Shimizu's Nobuko, I'll be sure to add it to my 'to-watch' list along with Naruse's Traveling Actors which I've been meaning to rewatch. I wasn't aware of Quack Infantry Troop but I just checked it out - v...

Hong Kong cinema

A general thread for all things Hong Kong cinema!! :D Feel free to post and talk about films, books, music, movie stars, directors, etc. To start things rolling, yesterday I watched David Chung's Royal Warriors (1986), an enjoyable action film with a handful of well choreographed fight sequences. Th...

Re: Last Watched

At its face, Quintet seems like an odd pivot for Altman - a large-scale post-apocalyptic dystopia centered on a small-scale board game - maybe that alone made contemporaneous audiences/critics a bit too dubious to earnestly grapple with it. There's a fine video essay re-appraisal of the film here: h...

You're right, I was thinking about that second tracking shot too, I believe this is the one you're referring to? https://streamable.com/mcris The shot also holds a secondary significance in tying back to this earlier scene of Mary leaving Smiley to accompany Bud. https://streamable.com/l3uor The sta...

Seen 11 1. The Bitter Tea of General Yen 2. It Happened One Night 3. Rain or Shine 4. American Madness 5. Meet John Doe Not especially crazy about Capra. My favorite of his films, The Bitter Tea of General Yen, seems a bit like an anomaly in his oeuvre. I managed to dig up a few interesting articles...

Seen 14. I think my most recent viewing was Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne on a 35mm print last year, everything else has been through DVD or VHS. I should really get around to revisiting some of the recent Blu-rays, the Criterion Blu-ray of L'argent looks quite crisp and that Japanese Blu-ray of Qua...

Solid year, although it's been awhile since I've seen some of these films so I'll probably try to revisit a few before finalizing my list. I'll try to keep this post updated with links to my notes in case anyone wants to know a little more about a film before deciding to check it out. 1. Portrait d'...

Re: Top Ten Favourite Rap Songs - all eras, subgenres, etc.

Nice to see Gucci Mane (!) and Mac Dre (!!) get some love on here. Narrowing down to top 10 was pretty difficult and required some oddly convoluted leaps of logic on my part (ex. I ultimately couldn't decide on one Three 6 Mafia track and ended up leaving them off here entirely  and while the...

Re: what did you listen to in 2018?

I like those Santosh Narayanan and John Prine joints, nrh! That's amazing that Prine is still making new music. I also like that Holiday track, bure420. Terrific twee-pop! I barely keep up with music nowadays but here's a couple of memorable songs I liked from this past year. NIKI - Vintage RnB-infl...

Re: Banner competition

I think that Rischka's Three Landscapes picture is my favorite. The geometric lines are visually appealing and the clean, minimalist style should look good across all platforms (computers and phones). I also like that the 'scfz' name is easy to read, which would add to the overall clarity of the ban...
