Re: Best of 2023 - personal list(s)

since my last update, i watched ten more 2023 films, and this time i actually expected some of them to be good (and occasionally i was right). my latest list, which still isn't great but is less embarrassing than the earlier ones. the top four will probably make my top ten in the end: 1. Anatomy of ...

Re: 1899 Poll 2.0

what source are we using for dates? Launch of the 'Oceanic' would be my easy #1, but it's 1898 on imdb, 1899 on letterboxd, so not sure if to include it, and i might also include Le Reveil de Chrysis which is 1897 on imdb, 1899 on letterboxd and Opium Den , 1901 on imdb, 1899 on letterboxd i feel li...

Re: What I Watched This Month......

almost entirely 2023 stuff, most of it not great: The Marsh King's Daughter (Neil Burger, 2023) - 7/10 Kidnapped (Marco Bellocchio, 2023) - 7/10 May December (Todd Haynes, 2023) - 7/10 The Holdovers (Alexander Payne, 2023) - 7/10 Dream Scenario (Kristoffer Borgli, 2023) - 6/10 Bottoms (Emma Seligman...

i don't really listen to albums, just tracks, but what i've heard from these has been good or amazing:

Ella Ion - Waiting
The Japanese House - In the End It Always Does
Jess Williamson - Time Ain't Accidental
Big Thief - Vampire Empire (7")
Yaeji - With a Hammer

Re: Best Films Seen in 2023 Regardless of Year

i did not have the most adventurous year of filmwatching, though did see a few famous films i had missed, these are the best thirty i saw: Miracle Mile (Steve de Jarnatt, 1988) Transit (Christian Petzold, 2018) The Hurricane (John Ford, 1937) Not I (Anthony Page, 1973) Cobra (George Cosmatos, 1986) ...

Re: Everything is Political

actually i think i was wrong on that point, i think trump is claiming immunity for acts within the 'outer perimeter' of official duties (they're quoting an old case* when they say that), and they're also claiming trump's efforts to sabotage a fair election were within that perimeter. so there are so...

Re: Everything is Political

my random thoughts on all of this: - trump wasn't going to win colorado, but he might have won the primary. the decision takes him off the primary ballot, and i'm not sure what happens if he wins by write-in votes. i doubt enough states will remove him from their primaries to make a difference, but ...

Re: Best of 2023 - personal list(s)

i watched ten new films so far this month, so i'll update my list, which is still mostly dire: 1. Anatomy of a Fall (Justine Triet) 2. The Marsh King’s Daughter (Neil Burger) 3. Asteroid City (Wes Anderson) 4. The Covenant (Guy Ritchie) 5. A Haunting in Venice (Kenneth Branagh) 6. We Have a Ghost (C...

i think richard wallace directed that, but it would have been fascinating if rowland brown did it. his only 1938 credit is a co-write on angels with dirty faces.

Best of 2023 - personal list(s)

this is the time of year when i usually start to catch up on new movies. i've so far seen only 12 films released in 2023, and because i think it's sort of funny to post a top ten list as bad as the one i'm posting below, i'll post the best ten (of twelve) 2023 films i've seen so far: 1. Anatomy of a...

Re: What did you read last month?

i've read four (all more than a decade ago), including christie malry , and i'd recommend three of them -- albert angelo combines the humour and experimentalism of christie malry , and it's the one i remember liking best, though it does use some postmodern devices that feel overdone by now (that's a...

from the mid-1930s up to the end of last century, this might be the year from which i've seen the fewest good films, though if karl says it's a good year, i'm sure i just haven't seen enough. several good comedies at the top but i'm hoping to replace the last several films on my list, they aren't fi...

yeah, the trump lawyer's argument just ignored the fact that trump is subject to criminal process. he also didn't seem to even understand the concept of a hypothetical, and like half of the questions judges ask in these appeal court cases are hypos. i liked how incisive millett was when the trump la...
