Cormac Mccarthy... one of those towering figures I just never got to. I've been intrigued by his newest diptych, but figured I should hit a couple of his classics first.

Re: Everything is Political
They came and took over the college campus I teach at during the last week of classes for some PGA game, and all my students were late for the final days, as the campus had leased out all of our parking to every middle-aged white man with shorts, a polo shirt, and white baseball cap that has ever ex...

Closed out the Nitrate Film Festival with the "Blind Date with Nitrate" where you don't get to find out which film you're seeing until it starts playing. Turned out to be The Third Man which I've often heard archivists cite as one of the prime examples of an idea film to see on Nitrate. Th...

Re: 1947 Poll 2.0
Watched Black Narcissus on its original Nitrate print last night, packed house full of people travelling from all over just to watch nitrate prints. It'll definitely go on my list. I really liked it. Honestly, I liked when it went baroque and gothic, and wish it had laid all that on a bit thicker. B...

Trying to see if I can score tickets to a screening of a nitrate print to Black Narcissus tonight. Not sure how hard that's going to be, but if possible that'll be a fun way to get to that one which I have not seen yet.

I've gotta keep an eye out for expanding this year... Still haven't seen the Rohmer, but the best films from this year, for me, are films I find interesting but still cannot embrace fully for one reason or another. Variety - Bette Gordon My Brother's Wedding - Charles Burnett Videodrome - David Cron...

Re: 2022 Academy Awards Poll!
I've got a fair number that I've seen only 1 or two nominees. I'll try to get in a couple more films so I can actually cast a vote on those. Adapted screenplay goes to Glass Onion despite that screenplay being dumb... because Women Talking is an actively terrible script. You can see great actors try...

270 minutes worth of documentation of apartheid and ethnic cleansing just gets exhausting about 4 minutes in. I also haven't seen the whole thing because I just get too angry over this stuff now. There's always more to learn, and value to be gleaned, but sometimes I have to forefront my mental health.

haven't seen the movies she did with techine, a director who is a big blind spot for me in general I've only seen one Techine, which was L'Adieu a la nuit . I thought the movie was really bad (islamaphobic in a really boring way) and it discouraged me from checking out his other work. BUT... Deneuv...

Almost done with Warlock by Oakley Hall, which is excellent. I'll have to check out the Dmytryk film now. But the book's scope is partly what makes it so fascinating, so I'm hesitant to see a trimmed version.

Re: 1976 Poll 2.0
The Marquise of O was pretty quickly one of my favorite Rohmer's by the time it ended. The refusal to "update" the novel for a more contemporary audience by changing details or commenting more explicitly on its sense of morality makes it so much more interesting to sit through. I hated th...

so i've finished tristram shandy - as much as one can say it's ever finished. seems like he could have gone on and on. what an amazing book This was probably the book I've come closest to not finishing. Re: SCFZ Sight & Sound Poll 2022
I haven't looked over the entire list yet, but the top 20 is definitely a surprise (and kind of a welcome one) to me. It seems obvious though that Criterion is having an oversize influence on the results here. However, that oversize influence did push Varda, Akerman, and Maya Deren into the top 20, ...

Yeah... That's a fair point. Thanks for the reminder that I have yet to see his Duchess of Langeise . I love La Belle Noiseuse as a Rivette film, but I wouldn't go to it to scratch my Balzac itch. I did not originally intend that pun, but once I noticed it my juvenile sense of humor prevented me fro...

Finally got to the new adaptation of Lost Illusions now that it's up on Mubi. The film is profoundly uninterested in the provinces and their juxtaposition with Paris, and it suffers from that lack of interest. But the depiction of restoration era journalism and capitalist ethics is passionate enough...

Got to see a nitrate print of Le Jour Se Leve, on loan from the Cinematheque Francaise. Somehow my first Carné film. We were told that we're likely the last audience to see the film on this print since it's in pretty bad shape. We were also told that it would make the subtitler's job difficult. I do...

How was the Vian? I'm interested in the movie version that apparently killed him, thanks to James Baldwin's really provocative analysis. But the book itself seems interesting.

Re: CoMo No.1: Poland (May, 2022)
Excited to explore some more. Most of my experience with Poland is the firmly established Giants. But Wajda's Innocent Sorcerers is a definite favorite, and relatively underseen compared to his more canonized works. I'd also like to throw a recommendation in for Kieslowski's Personnel . Which doesn'...
