Re: SCFZ poll: Otto Preminger
The 13th Letter (1951) With the poor picture quality and substantial dead air, felt more like a b-noir than something from Preminger with a big studio, but I actually really enjoyed this, despite it only making me want to watch Le Corbeau the whole time. Haven't seen the latter, but I'd have to gues...

Re: SCFZ poll: Otto Preminger
Andrew Sarris' write-up on Preminger from The American Cinema (1969) "Far Side of Paradise" refers to "the directors who fall short of the Pantheon either because of a fragmentation of their personal vision or because of disruptive career problems." Laura is Preminger's Citizen K...

Seen 10 1. Angel Face (1952) 2. Laura (1944) 3. Anatomy of a Murder (1959) 4. Daisy Kenyon (1947) 5. Whirlpool (1949) As evident by the number of films seen (for me), I really started getting into Preminger back in the day, after seeing and loving Angel Face and Laura . Angel Face may have one of th...

Re: 1959 poll
I should clarify that while I believe IMDb generally speaking has the more accurate information, I vastly prefer Letterboxd in every other respect. It's so enjoyable to utilize, browse, and log films on. Pure pleasure that only enhances the film watching experience.

Re: 1959 poll
I think IMDb, generally speaking, is the more accurate and authoritative source for such information, as all edits require approval from a moderator and sources provided before changes are accepted, whereas Letterboxd data can all be changed rather easily on TMDB without needing approval by a modera...

Carné's Port of Shadows (1938) Unequivocally one of the greatest things I've ever seen. Near-perfect cinema, full of more depth and vision than thought possible for 1938. Might do a letterboxd review to expand on those feelings. But for now, I leave you with these two images: https://i.imgur.com/wu4...

Re: John Wayne
I love him, but I grew up watching his movies over and over as a young child - though admittedly I remember very little about them other than a few such as The Shootist and True Grit . I'd love to watch all of his films though. Which begs the question, we've talked directors, but has anyone here see...

I've recently been interested in completing director filmographies and I have a private letterboxd list detailing which filmographies I've completed (based on letterboxd entries). Haven't done this often, but hope to get there eventually. I've seen all of Humphrey Jennings, the British documentaria...

starting at around 11:55 PM this took me back to about 8 years ago, when I was practically nocturnal - one memorable middle-of-the-night viewing experience was the first time I watched Lost in Translation , some time around 2:00-3:00 am, which only enhanced its power. I also had no job, and would p...

Re: Last Watched
Should articulate that the subjects of Soderbergh's films aren't what intrigue me, but rather his eye for technical detail, especially how he manipulates/perfects digital editing to manipulate/perfect his storytelling, and his keen eye for contrasting/staging flourescent/gaseous lights and colors, e...

Re: Last Watched
just a few films in and might have to jump on the Soderbergh bandwagon soon if he keeps this up. Didn't anticipate ever saying that, but the man is a colossal talent. Had he channeled it into more esoteric, non-genre films I think he'd be championed by even the most critical viewers.

Seen 4, will abstain as I don't remember anything about them.
Looks like a really interesting and passionate filmography with a personal (to Siodmak) mix of genres, eras, and cultural influences. Plenty to explore.

4 Siodmak, 4 Mamet.
Forgot all about Mamet, watched all 4 in 2011 - and back then thought they were nothing short of incredible. An overlooked auteur who is of course most known for his writing ability. Need to revisit/watch more from him to reassess.
