wandering with the moon - hasse ekman for all the adorably cute bad boy glint in ekman's progressive eye when he's talking about sex....he's throwing too much at this so it all comes out as a bit chaotic.... ....all the repeated references to doubles, falsity, acting, homunculus(!), pretence, and th...

sorry, i'm really grumpy with movies at the minute

brief encounter - david lean
dark is the night - boris barnet
they were expendable - john ford

haven't watched the ulmer so might remedy that, and if ekman's moon has subs would watch that

Re: Last Watched

i rewatched the harvey bunny movie lately.....are there any critical writings about it? it was a much better film than i remember, it has a pleasingly odd tone at times....and it's pretty unique so thought someone somewhere might have written something more on it other than 'huh who are the crazy on...

arme lena - otto rippert (1918) punq, as ever, is totally wrong, this was totally charming, so much more light and effortless than the last two 24's i watched. it's a shame not more of his stuff is available, at least in decent quality, this had an almost lubitsch energy to it, and ressel orla is ad...

watched a couple of films, both pretty bad vedi napoli e poi muori - eugenio perego this is sugary emigration trauma wish fulfilment, and leda gys is too pickford (US colonialism of film industry, ironically) when she should be magnani....but the neo-realist shots of naples were nice. and it was ver...

ilse and her three suitors - gustav trautschold (1913) one of those little short seemingly facile (not amazingly directed) comedies with a lot more going on if you care to look (tho you probably won't given how average the film is)....eg...the false deceptions of art allows the lovers to triumph... ...

THE CABINET OF DR. LARIFARI is actually the title of a wonderful German comedy from 1930 (which is imo also better than the great film by Wiene): https://letterboxd.com/film/the-cabinet-of-dr-larifari/ Highly recommended, if you can get your hands on it. oh this sounds great! and :( waiting endless...

pierrot, pierrette - louis feuillade effectively feuillade's last film this is a bittersweet, explicit handover to the next more corporate, more bourgeois, filmmaking generation....it's gentle but there are barbs, humour and poetry in some of the framing, and it's the self-referential turning into a...

der totentanz - urban gad (1911)

still haven't forgiven asta for the suffragette, but this one is so well staged....(love the way she keeps 'accidentally' bashing her injured husband's impotent 'leg' when she wants to go off gallivanting)

the diary of dr hart - paul leni (1918)

it was nice but suffers all the patriotic insufferableness that all the war films do
