Re: Recommendation Game [fka Pair-Up Game]

Thanks Flip! That wasn't very high on my radar at all. I'll get to it within a week... first I want to finish a block of Yoshishige Yoshidas I started watching last night. By the way, Curtis/Bure/Scrooge... I saw that you watched and loved Une si jolie petite plage , which made me mad at myself that...

Seen 68, mostly back in the 1990s 1. Swing Shift Cinderella 2. Bad Luck Blackie 3. I Only Have Eyes for You 4. Red Hot Riding Hood Do I get to nominate the next director? I thought of suggesting Denis Villeneuve but decided it would be better to wait until Dune comes out. So I'll go with René Clémen...

All the Fábri films I watched are well worth seeing, but I'll take Twenty Hours (Húsz óra) over The Fifth Seal. Both examine the horrors of WWII, but I find the less direct approach more moving.

I think besides Tarr, Miklos Jancso was the only Hungarian filmmaker I had even seen actually. at least a couple of us here did a bit of a dive into hungarian cinema over the summer, because some national cultural org made a lot of hungarian film available in good subtitled prints for free on youtu...

Re: SCFZ poll: Nic Cage

I like Nic Cage. I gather that his reputation is mixed, but I've only seen 10, skipping most of the junk, so I can only recall the heights of his career. I'll vote for three; the first two at least are brilliant performances: 1. Matchstick Men 2. Wild at Heart 3. Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orl...

The only one I can help with is Barbet Schroeder (seen 9). I also have plenty of Woos from ages ago, but I wouldn't depend on myself to submit a ballot.

Re: 2020 SCFZ Letterboxd Statpalooza

One stat I've always been interested in is the widest spread anyone gives to a single director. How often does a particular "champ" give 5.0 and 0.5 to different films by the same director? I suppose people could answer that for themselves without Kanafani running a complicated query. For ...

Re: 2020 SCFZ Letterboxd Statpalooza

Umbugbene, that Wake in Fright rating is wack. Is it because of the kangaroo hunt? Yes. And the octopus scene is why I gave Oldboy 0.5. I wasn't crazy about either film to begin with, but the brutal kangaroo slaughter and the octopus torture knocked them to zero. A couple of my favorite films (Andr...

Highest rated directors of all time, but allow directors with at least 50 ratings Looks like 50 ratings is around the cutoff to make a director's poll possible, so I whittled the list down to the ones we haven't polled yet, in case anyone wants ideas: Ritwik Ghatak Edward Yang Mani Ratnam Sergio Le...

Back in the '90s I worked for about a year as a flight attendant, and I used to fantasize about which films I'd like to swap into the plane's vcr. Mostly along those lines, plus Weekend, Begotten, and a few others.

In Northern Bohemia, there is an area we Bohemians call Bohemian Switzerland. I love how people in that part of the world call the hilliest part of their area their own "Switzerland". Sächsische Schweiz is another. Imagine if people did that around the world... the Black Hills would be &q...

Re: Rewatches and Rediscoveries

Y'all really don't want to see a list of my rewatches, because it would be too long. I'm constantly rewatching films I love, films I want to understand better, films I want to reassess, and films I want to show to others. I just checked my top 100, and I've seen them an average of 8 times each. Is t...

You said they've already seen some Kiarostami... does that include Where Is My Friend's Home? Because that seems to fit your requirements.

Also, I watched Picnic at Hanging Rock around their age, and it made a tremendous impression on me then. I'd also suggest Diva.

Letterboxd ought to enable muting people, so you could accept them out of politeness (if you're so inclined) but ignore their activity. I tend to follow back about 2/3 of my followers, but if someone's favorite films are all from the last 25 years I'm not interested in what they think.
