Thanks, this is very helpful! My watchlist now is mostly his 50s films plus Apenas un Delincuente.

Hugo Fregonese

Lately, I've been doing a bunch of director deep dives. I'm on Marcel Carne now, and next up will be Fregonese, but I've never seen anything by him and have no sense of the arc of his career. So, what are the essential Fregonese films to watch to get a good sense of his filmography?

Avalovara is one of those novels that, from the description, I really should have loved, but I really didn't, so I'm with you.

Is that a real Sappho poem? When I google it, all I get are references to the film, and now I'm intrigued by the possibility that Laura Marling is a Chick Strand fan...

Re: cup21 :: r4.6

xWater I liked the idea of Have Dreams, Will Travel , but was never sold on the characters - the precocious youth trope is a hard one to pull off, and I don't think the screenplay manages it. Lencho compared Woman on Fire Looks for Water to Weerasethakul, and it definitely has similar vibes, even th...

Re: cup21 :: r4.5

I love Metropolitan , though going in it was at a disadvantage because I prefer deeper cuts in this sort of cup. And I did enjoy Big Night well enough - it's a solid, character-driven dramedy of the sort you don't see much these days. Absolutely stacked cast, most of whom give good performances. But...

Re: cup21 :: r4.4

Painted Faces was lovely, with Sammo Hung qua actor teaching Sammo Hung qua character adding a weird layer of poignancy. And it even imbues a shot of a turtle walking through a hall with emotional significance (that poor turtle, though!). Didn't mind Pavasaris at all either - though the movies are ...

The bit with the interviews with James's male and female secretaries is funny, but yeah. Neither of these films were among my favorites from the cup, but I did learn a lot from the Edward James doc, since I only knew him as a patron of the surrealists and the guy whose head is in Not to Be Reproduce...

I did like the punk/Japanoise aesthetic of Electric Dragon , and at less than an hour it didn't wear out its welcome, but I left wanting something more. The Fool Killer isn't near as formally striking, but it's exactly the kind of minor but intriguing curio that I enjoy. Weirder, in its own way, tha...

xDrift

Both strong films, and I could easily have voted for the Vancini, but Inferno was a perfect marriage of form and content - the cinematic equivalent of a bunch of weird occultist prose poems.
