Re: Bugs & Suggestions

Glad it's back!
Have we gotten word about what specifically happened? And do we know what to do to protect against it in the future?

Re: SCFZ 10th Anniversary Poll: Ballots

Tentative list... I didn't limit director duplicates because some directors I just love a lot of their films specifically, but I may tweak this to allow for more breadth later. Underground (Anthony Asquith, 1928) The Cameraman (Buster Keaton, Edward Sedgwick, 1928) Harriet Craig (Vincent Sherman, 19...

Re: What did you read last month?

Cranking through Pramoedya Ananta Toer's Buru Quartet. Just finished the third one, Footsteps , which is really where the whole thing starts to come together. I think he gets compared to Mahfouz and the Cairo Trilogy a lot, but I don't think that comparison does him any favors. The writing is so muc...

Re: What did you read last month?

i finished gravity's rainbow after putting it down a bunch of times. there are some nice passages but man was it tough to get through he's doing melville wrong imo I sort of felt that way about Against the Day but GR really worked for me in almost every way. One of my favorite books. I loved how as...

I also haven't been able to get through it yet. But the images, taken on their own as individual shots, are quite impressive to me. Especially as someone who also has shot a lot of footage on the iPhone 6. I've never been able to find a workflow that yielded anything close to those results which I f...

Monster is not going to convert anyone. But I thought it was very sweet. Other than Shoplifters I find all his films charming, sweet, and kind of forgettable.

Someone directed me to this list on letterboxd today. https://i.ibb.co/85PtMvF/Screenshot-2024-01-17-9-54-25-AM.png I never followed Zahler much. I saw Bone Tomohawk and found it reasonably entertaining, but not particularly exciting. All I know is that he's considered sort of a MAGA filmmaker by ma...

Re: Best Films Seen in 2023 Regardless of Year

Top 20 I saw in 2023, arranged chronologically by release year. 1992 was a good year for me in 2023. Tiga Dara (Usmar Ismail, 1956) Falling Leaves (Otar Iosseliani, 1966) Accident (Joseph Losey, 1967) Du Cote d'orouet (Jacques Rozier, 1971) A Tale of Sorrow and Sadness (Seijun Seizuki, 1977) Winter ...

I've seen 18 films from 2023 so far. A few that I liked decently enough. I don't think I've discovered any new favorites though. Fallen Leaves - Aki Kaurismaki Poor Things - Yorgos Lanthimos I Told You So - Ginevra Elkann The Killer - David Fincher You Hurt My Feelings - Nicole Holofcener May Decemb...

I tried to listen to it, but it's very not for me. The way people seem to feel about Carlos D'Alessio's pan flute score in Baxter, Vera Baxter (which I love) is how this is hitting me. Loved reading through all the track titles though.

Not actually the last thing I saw, but the last thing I saw before a very chaotic week that prevented me from talking to people about it. Re: Everything is Political

So you mean to say there are (Israeli) Jews living in Hamas controlled territory and not being harassed by Hamas? Very much not what I mean to say. What I mean to say is what I said. It's not happening with Hamas, and it is happening with Israel. The comparison is apt because of the structure of po...

Re: Everything is Political

Well, if you want to draw a parallel, it's Hitler - Hamas obviously. Both want to exterminate all Jews. That ignores the structure of the Holocaust in favor of the individuals. Hamas hasn't put any Jews in concentration camps, Israel has done this with Palestinians. Hamas hasn't created Jewish ghet...

Re: Everything is Political

I have a lot of friends and people I care for in Palestine. None in Gaza, which is a tiny, morbid, upside. If I hear “blue no matter who” ever again, I’ll probably lash out at the speaker physically. The dems have always supported bloodshed if it buttresses their imperialist agenda. Asking me to vot...

My wife and I have done a good job of hitting nearly a horror film per day. We've only watched two that I found actually kind of scary. Demian Rugna's Terrified and Damian Mc Carthy's Caveat So clearly the Damians are winning this October. But John Grissmer's Scalpel was a standout for me too. Would...

But... it looks like wikipedia also cites it winning the top prize at the 72 Carthage film festival. So 72 is probably more accurate.

Yeah. I think McElroy's cache has more than just a little to do with the wildly inflated prices. Oh, is that the basis for the Radu Jude film? I didn't realize it was an adaptation. Very cool. Also, I finally got a hold of a copy of Joseph McElroy's (extremely difficult to find) Lookout Cartridge which is noteworthy because it's literally about filmmaking. Some friends brought me along on their Barbenheimer venture. Which I'm glad I did. I liked both films enough. But I somehow have way more qualms with Oppenheimer.
